Frequently Asked Questions

Much research has been carried out on the safety of ultrasound used in medical practice.  This has confirmed that there are no detrimental effects at the intensities used in medical scanning.

In addition, there are indices on ultrasound equipment, which tell us the intensity of ultrasound used, and these are monitored during your examination, to keep them as low as possible, following the principle which ultrasound professionals abide by – ALARA – as low as reasonably achievable

4D scan is an ultrasound examination that allows you to see the face and features of your unborn baby moving in 3 dimensions and in colour. The 4th dimension is time, so you see your baby moving and can gain an incredible insight into your baby’s life in your womb.

3D is the still image of the moving 4D.

The 4D scanning process employs the same ultrasound technology used in normal 2D pregnancy scanning. The difference is that powerful computing within the ultrasound machine enables the image of your baby be viewed in three dimensions.

Therefore 4D scanning is just as safe as the 2D process.

The quality of all images, 2D, 3D and 4D, are dependent on factors such as maternal body mass index and the amount of adipose tissue, baby’s position and gestational age, and also the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding baby. These are beyond our control. We will always endeavour to obtain the best results on the day, and where possible arrange a rescan if progress cannot be made, and is appropriate. The Baby Scan Company cannot be held responsible for the images/DVD in any way whatsoever.

A Doctor/Midwife/Obstetrician referral isn’t necessary for a 2D/4D Baby Scan. We accept self-referrals where you can book your own appointment with us. Reports can be passed on to your GP/Obstetrician or Midwife if required.

Yes, this is no problem. Simply make your wishes known before your scan. It may be necessary, that depending upon baby’s position, you will be asked to look away from the monitor, for a few seconds, if the scan moves to the region in question, in order to avoid the gender of the baby coming to light.

You can make your booking as far in advance as you would like.  Each scan description on our “Scans available” page, will guide you as to the stage each scan is designed for.

If you do not require gender determination as part of your scan, please just make your wishes know to us and we will be happy to oblige.

Should your baby be in a poor position, and we are unable to obtain clear images to fulfill the objective of your scan despite employing methods to improve baby’s position, then we will arrange for you to return another day for a rescan, free of charge.

We love Families  –   they make the world go round!   You are most welcome to bring family and friends to your scan.   They will be made most welcome, and hopefully also add to your joy, being able to share baby with them!

To be prepared, please do let us know if you wish to bring others with you to enjoy your scan, and we can then do our best to accommodate them with seating!

Yes, no problem at all, and discounts will be given.

Safety and Guidelines.

Research over time has proven that Ultrasound used responsibly, at the low levels employed for the purposes of Obstetric scanning, has no negative effects.

In addition, modern Ultrasound equipment display Safety Indices based upon the machine settings and power level used – a responsible user will continually monitor these and keep these to a minimum, in accord with good practice.

In accord with best practice and guidelines, we do not employ Doppler scanning in the first trimester, due to the slightly higher intensities involved.

All our scans are performed using the lowest levels of Ultrasound in adherence to the “ALARA” (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle, in accord with the British Medical Ultrasound Society, of whom we are Members.

If you have any other questions, or wish a scan package that is not available on our scans page, please do give us a call, and we will be happy to help!
